What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

“Jiu-jitsu” translates from Japanese as “The Gentle Art” with one of its key principles being that a smaller, weaker person can use leverage and submissions (chokes, locks) to defend themselves against a bigger opponent. There is NO striking (kicking and punching).

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art based on grappling and ground fighting, focusing on the skill of controlling one’s opponent through techniques that force him or her to submit.

Not only one of the most effective forms of self defence out there, BJJ is also an increasingly popular sport, due to the growing audience of Mixed Martial Arts (most of the top stars in UFC hold a high belt ranking in BJJ).

Although no combat sport is 100% risk free from injury, BJJ is considered one of more safer Martial Arts. Known as the “game of human chess” the idea is that practitioners can use strategy, technique and execute moves realistically. If caught in a submission, all the partner needs to do is tap the submitter’s body to signify surrender, and the submitter will release the submission.

There are many benefits: Get fitter, self defence, socialise, stress relief, character building, self improvement, have fun. For many BJJ becomes a way of life, and once you have grasped the basics there is the option of competing …… all year round.

With consistent class attendance and once you have acquired a bit of proficiency with the basics Brazilian Jiu Jitsu provides a lot of opportunities to compete should you wish to, so come and get involved!  You will never look back!
