Originally built in 1635 our house is the oldest on Castlegate. Once used by Bonnie Prince Charlie’s horses on his ill fated trip South in 1745, the house boasts a wealth of history. Miss Jean Cruickshank, a muse of Robert Burns and inspiration for his song “A rosebud by my early walk”, written in 1787 as well as “A beauteous rosebud young and gay”—came to Meadhon House as a young bride. The daughter of the Latin master at the High School of Edinburgh she was only 12 years old when they were written, an accomplished singer she performed Burns’ songs while accomanying herself on piano.

The house itself is situated in the middle of Castlegate on a hill. The word meadhon meaning “midst” or “middle”.
