Every year people raise funds for the RNLI by taking on the Brae – the only road in and out of Burnmouth – tackling the 20% incline on foot or on bike.
The first Brae Race took place in 1987, and was a very relaxed sponsored cycle, with the timing done using a kitchen clock at the top & the bottom of the Brae! The runners sprint was introduced in 1998 and with Berwick Wheelers giving the organisers a hand with some more sophisticated timing, the day began to grow.
1999 saw the addition of The Challenge, a 2.5 mile road race, starting at the Flemington. 2003 saw the challenge step up to a 5K and competitors were encouraged to take part in all 3 of the events.
A new race for 2015 was the Emergency Services Sprint. They are a competitive bunch so we are hoping for a thrilling race from them again this year!
This year we hope to have representatives from Border Search & Rescue and other local interest groups. We also introduced a new route for the Junior Mile in 2016, well, make that more like a 2K. A bit more off road and scenic, come & try it out!
With the youngest entrant to date being just 4 years old, this is a day where anyone of any age can participate.
